 About New Forest Ouessants

Picture
Ouessant sheep are small and friendly with lots of character.

To find out all about Ouessants follow the links on that page.

We had heard about Ouessants and after researching, we decided this breed would be ideal.
We made enquiries and went off to a breeder to see these sheep and ask all the right questions, of  course we quickly succumbed to these wonderful little guys.

It was quite soon when we were back to the breeder to purchase 2 ewes Jenna and Isobella, who had both had a lamb this year, so are experienced Mums, we also purchased a young ram lamb Hickory, who is not related to the ewes. We  prepared the paddock with new stock fencing and new posts all ready for the arrivals.
It was an easy decision to get 2 more ewes Amelie and Evette, who were just numbers on their pedigree, now they have names (French of course !), these had a long journey from the Isle of Man, they are 1 year older than my first ones and have had a lamb each for the last 2 years. These sheep (except Amelie) are now sold and all mine are  homebred with a few exceptions to bring in new and more important genes.

Ouessants can be kept on quite a small acreage and eat the grass evenly and can even nibble hedges, so make sure to have small hole mesh if they are in danger of eating your neighbour's hedge or plants (which could be poisonous) as they can get their heads right through ordinary stock fencing and stand up to get at even more leaves, we  have just learned the hard way . If there is a shelter they will use it to get out of the rain or sun).

Ouessants need a fairly meagre .diet, there is no need to feed supplements until the last weeks of pregnancy, ours do like a small feed of hay, they are quite greedy for  and love eating it.
All our Ouessants are from Dutch/French lines
Won't go on here about how to look after them as there is plenty of info on the internet.
